Acne Scar Reduction

Acne is a common condition that may result in permanent scarring and negatively impact on the quality of life. Genetic factor, severity of condition and lack of attentions all contribute to scar formation.  Acne scars include atrophic, hypertrophic, and keloid scars. 80-90% acne scars are atrophic scars. Majority of facial acne scars are atrophic scars. Most common hypertrophic and keloid scars are on chest and shoulder.

Facial atrophic acne scars include ice pick, rolling, and boxcar subtypes. Ice pick scars are narrow, sharply demarcated, v-shaped tracts, awless than 2mm in size, and deep into dermis or even subcutaneous layer. Boxcar scars are wider, U-shaped tracts, with sharp, vertical edges extending 0.1-0.5 mm into dermis. Rolling scars exhibit dermal tethering of the dermis to the subcutis, more than 4 mm width, irregular and rolling appearance. Scar classification, severity, and other skin conditions may determine which treatment method be more effective.

Acne scar treatment options include energy-based and non-energy-based methods. Non-energy-based treatment options include subcision, punch excision, punch elevation, dermabration, microneedling, dermal fillers, and chemical peels. Energy-based treatment options include light therapy, non-ablative laser, non-fractional ablative lasers, fractional ablative lasers, radio-frequency devices and fractional radio-frequency microneedling devices.  We use two excellent, complementary devices (the fractional CO2 laser and the fractional radio-frequency microneedling) for the revisions or improvements of facial atrophic acne scars.

The above before-and-after photo demonstrates excellent clinical improvements of the acne scars by a fractional CO2 laser.

The clinical outcome demonstrated in the above before-and-after photo is achieved by a fractional radio-frequency microneeding device.
