Cosmetic Ink Pigment Removal

Cosmetic inks or pigments are color pigments inserted into the dermis layer of the skin for a long lasting improvements of appearance or facial definition.  In most cases, cosmetic inks defines eye brows, lips and cheeks with a soft, nature appearance that looks like perfectly applied make-up.  However, as other traditional tattoos, customers regrets their cosmetic inks for various reasons.  Laser removal of cosmetic inks is the best treatment modality because it has very, very low chances of scarring comparing to other non-laser methods.

It is not recommended to remove cosmetic tattoo that has been done in under 6 months.  It is also not recommended for laser treatment of titanium dioxide pigments in lip area.  A nanosecond Q-switch laser is more efficient in removing permanent makeups than a picosecond laser.

Most ink particles used in permanent makeup has big size.  Skin colored pigments for covering up mistakes are deliberately manufactured to have big titanium ink particles. A nanosecond Q-switch laser is more efficient in breaking up large ink particles than a picosecond Q-switch laser.

Cosmetic pigments are mostly applied as permanent or semi-permanent makeups.  These pigments are more often inserted in the facial skin tissue where there is less fat tissue and thinner skin thickness.  Although there is no laser specially designed for cosmetic pigments removal, the general guideline for removing cosmetic pigments on face is utilizing the least amount of laser energy necessary that can break down the pigments and minimize the risk of scaring.  Secondly, numbing cream as well as active skin cooling might be necessary before and during the laser removal process.  Good news is that cosmetic pigments are removed faster than most body tattoos since it is close to the heart and there is a lot of blood vessels in the face.

The major consideration is higher risk of scarring associated with removing new pigments less than 6 months old because it would require higher laser fluence and more sessions to remove them.

Titanium is a metal that has been mixed into a white powder.  When the laser hits it, a chemical reaction turns its white color into a dark grey color, which should be avoided in lip area.
